SCHWARZENEGGER, TRIBAL GAMING COMPROMISE LIKELY

To read the opinion pages of California’s big-city newspapers, one would think having Arnold Schwarzenegger in the State House spells doomsday for Golden State Indian tribes. “By all conventional wisdom, the fortunes of organized labor and Indian tribes, the biggest spenders against the recall of Gray Davis, will take a turn for the worse under Gov.-elect Arnold Schwarzenegger’s administration,” reported the L.A. Times.

HARRAH’S TAPS IGT FOR RECORD SLOT ORDER

International Game Technology got a huge boost this week in the form of an order from Harrah’s Entertainment for 11,000 cashless slot machines. The order, one of the largest ever for the Reno-based slot giant, was described by IGT Chief Executive G. Thomas Baker as one of “historical significance” for both companies.

HASTERT CHASTISES CASINOS’ INVESTMENT IN DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATES

House Speaker Dennis Hastert took a shot at casinos’ political contributions last week, upset that more money was going to Democrats in this year’s election cycle. A report from the nonprofit Center for Responsive Politics showed that Democrats have received $1.17 million, or 54 percent of the gaming industry’s contributions, while Republicans have received just over $1 million.

TELEVISED RACING A POTENT BOON TO CONNECTICUT OTB

Autotote Enterprises, a subsidiary of Scientific Games Corp. which operates the off-track betting network in Connecticut, received confirmation last week from the states' Gaming Policy Board that it would be allowed to televise horse and greyhound races on cable television.
